North Redondo Beach is more of an inland suburban environment. Hawthorne Boulevard is the commercial spine of North Redondo and a major vehicle corridor. The South Bay Galleria mall sits at Hawthorne and Marine Avenue, generating consistent retail traffic, delivery truck traffic, and pedestrian activity at its perimeter. Artesia Boulevard connects North Redondo to neighboring cities and sees significant cross-city traffic including commercial vehicles. The intersection density and commercial-zoning density in North Redondo means many accidents here involve vehicles backing out of commercial driveways, making unprotected left turns across Hawthorne, or rear-ending in stop-and-go traffic.
South Redondo Beach has a distinctly different character. Catalina Avenue is the main commercial street running south toward the pier and Riviera Village. PCH forms the western boundary. PCH corridor crashes. Pacific Coast Highway moves through the western portion of South Redondo at speeds that make collisions serious. Left-turn accidents across PCH at side-street intersections, rear-end collisions at signal backups near the pier access, and accidents involving vehicles entering and exiting the PCH travel lane at the El Esplanade area are all recurring patterns.
